When we follow Jesus, He sends us out to fish!

But that begs a crucial question: Why fish? Why not leave fishing to the experts and the folks who like to do it? Why should I fish for people? Why should I bother folks who are already happy in their religious world and don't want to be bothered? After all, don't all religions lead to God? That's what everyone is saying, anyway. So it's right isn't it?

Well, to be honest, no, that's not right. In Acts 4:1-22, Peter gives us three vital reasons why we need to fish. And notice that these guys were fishing among those who were already quite religious, but were not finding their way to Jesus!

  • God wants us to fish and when we do, we please Him. This was so important, that Peter and the other followers of Jesus shared the story of Jesus with the very folks who had Jesus crucified. There were jailed and threatened, but they felt they must share Jesus with others. (See Acts 4:19!)
  • Our message is not a philosophy or theology: it's a story about God entering history and dying for us as a real person and being raised from the dead. (See 1 John 1:1-3 for more on this!) It's not intuitive: no one is going to contemplate the grandeur of the universe and come up with the story of Jesus. It has to be shared and told. (See Acts 4:20!)
  • There is no other way to God but through Jesus. While this is not politically correct to say, this is the message that Jesus declared about Himself (John 14:6) and the message the followers of Jesus declared even under the threat of persecution and death to religious people. (See Acts 4:12!)
So, we are committed to share the story of Jesus in history and share the story of Jesus in our own lifes, honoring Him as our Lord, while treating others with gentleness and respect. (See 1 Peter 3:15!)
